Playground

Shark River Park is the first county park purchased by Monmouth County in 1961 and occupies 946 acres on either side of the Shark River in Neptune, Wall Township, and Tinton Falls. Its waterways, forests, and ponds attract fishermen and hikers in the summer, and cross-country skiers and ice skaters in the winter.

There are mountain bike, horse, hiking, and trail running trails throughout the park. Its habitats include a sandy hill, pine-oak forest, and freshwater marsh. The park also contains a playground and is home to many species of wildlife.

Picnic Areas

Located in Wall Township NJ, Shark River Park offers picnic areas with grills and tables. It is a great place for families with kids to enjoy an afternoon in nature. You can also go hiking or biking, or take your children to the playground.

The park was first established in 1961 and consists of 946 acres on either side of the Shark River in Neptune and Wall Townships. It has a variety of habitats ranging from the river to sandy hills, and pine-oak forest.

There are several trails that run throughout the park. The most popular trail is the 4.1-mile loop that includes a combination of easy and moderate terrain. You will hike along the Shark River and over boardwalks. The trails are color-coded and have signs indicating the trail’s difficulty level.

Basketball Courts

The park’s basketball courts are popular with local residents and are reserved on a first-come, first-serve basis. Those who enjoy fishing can try their luck in the pond, which is stocked seasonally with trout. Largemouth bass, catfish, and yellow perch may also be landed. A state fishing license is required.

The trails are color-coded for easy navigation and take you through both wetlands-floodplain and pine-oak forest habitats. Animals and plants common to these habitats can be spotted along the way.

Horseshoe Pits

Located at 1101 Schoolhouse Road, Shark River Park is the Monmouth County Park System’s first park. Opened in 1961 the 946 acre park encompasses the river and its adjacent ponds, sandy hills, and pine oak forests. It is open from 7 a.m. to dusk daily all year and offers a variety of recreational activities including fishing, hiking, biking, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and shuffleboard as well as a reservable shelter building, playground, picnic areas, horseshoe pits, and fitness trail.

It features a half basketball court and official size horseshoe pits on the back yard along with a full garden for the vegetable lovers. The newer construction is located close to Shark River Park and some of the finest beaches on the Jersey Shore.

Boat Launch

There is a boat launch at the park where you can take a quick spin around the lagoon. It is not recommended to swim in the Shark River inlet as it is a dangerous place with dangerous currents.

The 933-acre park is known for fishing, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, and other recreational activities in the summer. In the winter, the park attracts cross-country skiers and ice skaters to its quiet wooded trails.

No person shall dump, throw, or drop paper, bottles, cans, refuse, trash, or any other garbage in or on the waterways, beaches, piers, docks, slips, or wharves. Any moored or docked boat that is abandoned, becomes a nuisance, is unseaworthy, or sinks on the waters shall be removed by the owner within 48 hours of notice from the Township Police Department.
