The Park
Historically the bayfront areas have been a focus of recreation, commerce, and natural resources. From the Lenni Lenape Indians through today, visitors have enjoyed the flora and fauna of the bay shore, the natural bathing beaches, and the access to major navigational routes.
This 52 park has 1.3 miles of walk/bikeway, fishing piers, a playground, a performance gazebo, a nature study area, and observation areas with stunning views of the Raritan River and the bay. The park is a result of a cooperative effort between the Township of Old Bridge and Middlesex County.
The park reopened last summer following Hurricane Sandy’s $5 million damage. Middlesex County parks employees cleaned up the contamination and brought in sand to help return the beachfront at Old Bridge Waterfront Park Laurence Harbor NJ to its pre-storm condition. The County plans to have the rest of the park and the adjacent Cliffwood Beach repaired within a year. This will allow the community to once again gather on this special piece of property for picnics, swimming, and social activities.
The Beach
With a length of about two miles, this stunning beach is ideal for sunbathing and playing beach sports. It also offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities, such as walking or jogging on the park’s paved trails. The trails are flat and usually take less than 60 minutes to complete. Three fishing piers extend into Raritan Bay. They are popular with local fishermen and can be accessed from the park’s boardwalk.
The county has restored two of the piers, and a contractor is working to repair the third. County Executive Joseph Albanir hopes to have the remaining pier repaired by this summer. The Boardwalk
The boardwalk is a great place to take a leisurely stroll while taking in the beautiful views of the bay. It also offers a playground, picnic tables, basketball courts, comfort stations, and three fishing piers.
Visitors can enjoy the scenery by watching the migratory birds and dolphins that frequent the area. In addition, the area is home to a large population of Atlantic horseshoe crabs. The area is also popular for jogging and dog walking.
The township and Middlesex County formed a cooperative partnership to build the park and its facilities, which include a 1.3-mile boardwalk that offers beautiful bay views. The park is located in the neighborhoods of Laurence Harbor and Paul’s Beach, and it also includes a new playground.
